Moles in my lawn!

Cute in cartoons or children’s books, not so much in your lawn. Here’s a suggestion:

Q. We have moles. I was told to kill the grubs and the moles would leave. Will grub control effect the worms and birds?
-Gibson City, Illinois

A. This past winter created a huge mole problem here in Massachusetts. The moles may be after grubs, but they may be after worms as well. There are several organic mole repellents that contain castor oil. This comes either as a granule that you apply with a spreader or as a hose attachment sprayer. Be sure to do the entire lawn. This will drive the moles out of the area. If you have grubs in the lawn, there is an organic grub control called milky spore. Once you have it applied it may take a year or more to be 100% effective, but after it gets established, the milky spore will control the grubs for 10 to 20 years. This product will not hurt the birds or the worms.
